OUR Cataloging Policy covers processing because we have high standards of book care and service. Processing should be completed as soon as possible within two weeks of arrival.
The library media specialist will follow these steps:
Attach a barcode to the top right corner of the back cover parallel to the spine.
Attach a call number label on the bottom of the spine.
Attach a genre label directly above the call number, if applicable.
Attached a spine label with the Dewey Decimal Number and/or the first three letters of the author's name, or the full name of the subject of a biography, following the Classification rules of this Policy.
Cover all attachments with a label protector.
Clean and laminate the book.
Use the OUR School stamp in the inside cover of the book.
Note: in the case that books arrive pre-processed, the above standards for processing should be checked and corrected if needed. In either scenario, the MARC records should also be checked before the book is shelved. Best practice includes sharing news of processed books with teachers, students, and parents when applicable. Consider whether newly processed books will be shelved, included in a new display, and/or shared with classes.
